The villa Cavrois

HISTORY OF THE VILLA CAVROIS
An architectural manifesto, Villa Cavrois, the work of architect Robert Mallet-Stevens, a figure of the modernist school, was designed and built in Croix between 1929 and 1932 for Paul Cavrois, a textile industrialist from the Nord department, and his family.Listed as a historical monument in 1990 thanks to citizen mobilisation, and acquired by the State in 2001, the huge restoration project implemented in 2003 by the DRAC Nord-Pas-de Calais and then taken over by the Centre des Monuments Nationaux in 2008 will be completed in 2015.

The façade
The Villa Cavrois has two façades of imposing dimensions. The more austere north façade evokes the silhouette of an ocean liner. In the south, the façade overlooking the garden works like a theatre curtain, erected along the terrace where family members gather.

The park
The park surrounding the villa was designed by Mallet-Stevens. Heir to the formal gardens of the seventeenth century, the park offers, with its its alleys and its water mirror, an extension of the lines and dimensions of the villa. In this it forms a true jewel that magnifies the building.

The dining room of the parents
The dining room of the parents communicates with the hall-lounge by a sliding door. As in the adjoining room, a huge bay window overlooks the park.

The kitchen
With its built-in furniture and advanced equipment, the kitchen is an emblematic room of the Villa Cavrois. Its image was one of the most disseminated after the inauguration of the mansion. In this functional area with impeccable hygiene, the architecture gives way to the domestic arts.
